I heard that if I eat gluten free foods that I can lose weight is that true?
- Rhonda Answers: I wish it were that simple because I should be about 30 pounds lighter! Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You should not chose a gluten free diet just because you want to lose weight because gluten free products are still carbohydrates and depending on whether or not the products are whole grain or not will also impact your diet. So, whether you eat gluten free or whole wheat, if you want to lost weight you must add exercise at least 3 to 5 days per week! In order to lose 1 pound, you must reduce your diet by 3,500 calories! So, if you do not have medical conditions that prevent you from eating gluten free, I recommend that you replace all white flours with high fiber, whole grains like wheat and eliminate high sugar grains such as corn. Limit your intake to about 2 or 3 servings of grains a day, that’s 1/2 cup per serving of pasta, rice or crackers, (if you exercise 3 days per week). If you don’t exercise, then consume less grains and eat more vegetables!
